Every parent’s eyes light up when they see the smile on their infant baby’s face. Children continue to be the fountain for joy for parents as they grow up. Researchers have found that before children reach the age of five years, over fifty percent of them succumb to dental infections and problems. The dental treatment is a very expensive affair and your will have to pay from your pocket as most of the insurance policies do not cover this in their policy. It has been discovered that the highest number of dental problems are faced by children in poor and minority communities. Dental problems should be detected very early during infancy itself and treatment provided for every person needs his teeth in good condition to last over sixty years.
As parents, it becomes our duty to ensure that we are responsible enough to maintain the oral hygiene of our infants and as they grow we should teach them the right habits to improve their dental health.
These are few basic guidelines and answers that as parents, should implement with our children:
A. As soon as you celebrate the babies first birthday, you can schedule an appointment with the Dentist for this is the right time.
This is when the babies start growing their first tooth. The doctor will be able to check and advise on preventive care to avoid nursing related and milk bottle related infections and also check for any signs of dental problems.
B. You can start light brushing of babies gums within a few days after birth.
You can use a soft cloth or infant toothbrush to clean the gums with water. As the baby starts growing teeth, you can start brushing them twice a day with just a touch of tooth paste.
C. Thumb and Finger sucking.
It is quite normal for the infants and toddlers to suck their thumb and finger up to the age of two to two and half years. If this habit continues beyond three years of age, then it can effect the growth of the teeth which might get protruded or jagged. In such situations, you should discuss with the Dentist and follow his advise.
d. Children and Toothache
If your child starts crying complaining of tooth ache, first things you can do is to rinse the mouth and apply an ice pack to numb the pain and reduce the swelling. Speak to your Dentist regarding the problem, schedule an immediate appointment and also discuss with your doctor on which pain killer to give to the child to reduce his pain till he gets to the clinic.
e. Avoiding Dental injuries
One of the most common problems faced by children is the danger of injury to the face and damage to the jaws and teeth while playing. If the child has milk teeth and suffers a tooth injury, in time he will be able to get permanent tooth. If the injured teeth are permanent teeth, then of course there is a cause for worry.
Hence while playing any sport, ensure the children use protective gear and safety tools and accessories such as helmets, dental guards while playing. Even while driving with your children, make sure they have the safety seat belts on at all times and avoid any mishaps and injuries to the face.
